"Did Mom ever get poisoned?"

"Why have I never heard Matt or my brothers mention it?"

"And who is Dr. Walter? Why would he know about this?"

"Take care of Lucas Lampard first. I'll get back to you soon," Astrid said, hanging up the phone, her mind in turmoil.

She immediately dialed Matt. At that moment, Matt was lounging in a deck chair, soaking up the sun.

Being woken from his nap had initially annoyed him, but seeing Astrid's name on the caller ID brought a smile to his face. "Hey, Star, missing your old man already?"

"Dad, I need to ask you something."

Sensing something off in her tone, Matt straightened up. "What's on your mind?"

"Did Mom ever get poisoned?"

There was a pause. "Yes, but how did you find out?"

"Do you know someone named Denton Walter?"

Matt furrowed his brow, thinking back. "Yes, I do. Back then, when your mom was poisoned, I called in many renowned international experts. Denton was one of them, but despite their efforts, they couldn't find a cure."

"Back then, I wasn't powerful enough. A mysterious figure tried to coerce me into doing their bidding by injecting your mom with a poison that only they had access to. The plan was to control her and, through her, control me."

"After you were born, your mom was already struggling with depression. The poison only made things worse. When I wasn't looking, she took her own life."

"She never managed to rid herself of the poison before she left this world."

As he recounted the story, Matt's body trembled involuntarily. The sun blazed down, yet he felt as though he were trapped in an ice chamber. The cold seeped into his bones.

"Dad, who was that mysterious person? Tell me."

"He's dead."
