Astrid watched Linda with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. “You've always looked down on others, and now you're here trying to cozy up to me. It makes me think you have an ulterior motive. There's no way I'd accept your invitation to dinner.”
Linda hadn’t expected Astrid to be so blunt.
Holding her cup of tea, Linda found herself at a loss for what to do next. The truth was, she was indeed plotting against Astrid. The tea was laced with something, and the dinner invitation was a trap.
But Astrid saw right through her, her expression revealing she wasn’t fooled for a moment.
Awkwardly gripping the warm cup, Linda bit her lip, caught between staying and leaving. “Well, I should get going then. I didn’t mean to disturb you.”
With those words, Linda turned and left, her footsteps unsteady, an air of guilt hanging over her retreating figure.
Even Selena, who was busy touching up Astrid’s makeup, noticed something was off. “That one’s up to no good,” she whispered. “You’d better be careful, Astrid. I remember reading online about her crowd. They act all respectable, but they’ve caused a lot of trouble for newcomers in the industry. They get away with it because of their family connections, and those without any backing just have to take it silently.”
“And didn’t Linda once publicly profess her love for Chief Elio?” Selena added, suddenly realizing she might have said too much. She clamped her mouth shut, embarrassed.
Astrid turned to Selena, intrigued. “Linda likes Elio? When was this?”
“Two or three years ago, when you were overseas.” Selena hesitated, “But really, it’s nothing. Every year, a bunch of actresses confess their love for Chief Elio. Linda was just one of many who got ignored.”
