Agnes gazed out the window, lost in thought. The world outside seemed unchanged, as if time itself had paused. Yet, within her, there was a strange, unsettling feeling.
The cab driver broke the silence, his voice filled with amusement. "Look at that guy back there! Running barefoot in the dead of winter. Is he filming a movie or just trying to get some exercise?"
Agnes found herself intrigued, curiosity piqued. She caught a glimpse of a figure in the rearview mirror—indeed, someone sprinting down the street without shoes.
"Looks like he's chasing someone," Agnes remarked, more to herself than to the driver.
The driver chuckled. "Young lady, you've been watching too many TV dramas. Who runs after someone barefoot these days? That's just plain crazy."
Despite his lighthearted mockery, Agnes couldn't shake a feeling of unease. But she kept her thoughts to herself.
Soon enough, they reached the Sapphire Tower Hotel. Elton had everything arranged, so she didn't need to check in. The sky was already darkening, and Elton was still nowhere to be seen.
She considered calling him but hesitated, not wanting to interrupt if he was caught up in work. Her mind drifted back to their college days, where they were just students with dreams and endless possibilities. Now, Elton was a successful businessman, a fact that filled her with a sense of wonder.
Agnes waited patiently in the hotel room, and before long, Elton arrived, his arms laden with bags and boxes of food.
"Have you finished your work?" Agnes asked, surprised and delighted.
