Yvan's voice startled Matilda, snapping her out of her thoughts. Before she could fully process what was happening, Yvan was right in front of her, moving with a speed that seemed impossible for someone who was just hooked up to an IV a few hours ago.
Matilda was amazed at how quickly Yvan seemed to recover. It was like a shadow from the past had returned, but this time, Yvan was different. He pinned her down, but there was a gentleness to his grip, as if he was afraid to hurt her.
"Hold on, Yvan, are you—" Matilda started to say, but Yvan cut her off, his eyes red with emotion.
"Are you sick of me, Matilda? Is that it?" he demanded. "Because I once wronged you, does that mean I'm forever indebted to you, destined to be your burden?"
Matilda shook her head, struggling to find words. The Yvan standing before her now reminded her of the man who once hurt her without a second thought. Yet, he seemed so different, like he was trying so hard not to cause her pain.
He was fighting against his own instincts, trying not to let his emotions take over. But the chaos inside him was overwhelming, pushing him to the brink. He would risk everything for Matilda and Logan, but his sacrifices seemed to weigh them down instead of bringing them closer.
They wanted to escape, to get as far away from him as possible. No matter how much he tried to change, he was still the monster in their eyes, unable to melt their hearts of stone.
