About tenmimites later, several police officers showed up outside the shoe section. After a brief round of questions, they went through the security footage found that there was enough evidence to spare them from investigating the matter. 

Now that they had legitimate reasons to make an arrest, the cops turned to Josephine and asked, “Do you know where the suspect is?” 

Josephine frowned. “I can only give you her number. I don’t know anything else,” 

The cops jotted down Nadine’s number and called it on the spot. They even put the phone on speaker. 

The call went through quickly, though the person who answered had a deep, male voice. Josephine knew the owner of that voice–it was Zaynı 

The cops did not look amused as one of them asked, “Hello, is this Nadine Sommers number?” 

Zayn replied after a low ham of affirmation. “Who is this?” 

The officer briefly introduced himself and said gravely, “We have enough evidence to believe that Ms. Sommers has committed a theft. Please have her turn herself in at the precinct to aid us with our investigation. If not, we will be forced to arrest her.” 

“Theft?” Zayn countered incredulously, scoffing. “You’ve got to be kidding.“‘ 

“I assure you, I’m not,” the cop bit out coldly. “Where is Nadine Sommers now?” 

Zayn was silent for a moment before he replied, “Tell me your name, your badge number, and the precinct you work at. I’ll need to verify your identity before I provide the information you want.” 

“You have five minutes to verify my identity, after which if you fail to return my call or refuse to cooperate with our investigation, we have the right to make an amest,” the cop warned. 

Five minutes later, the cop’s phone rang. This time, it was Nadine who spoke on the other line. “Hello, I was informed that you called regarding a theft that I allegedly committed. May I know who made the report?” 

Josephine was about to interject when the cop raised his hand to silence her. She had no choice but to keep her mouth shut, though her eyes burned with rage heard the cop say to Nadine, “We will discuss this when you show up at the precinct.”

“All night. I’ll be night there,” Nadine said. She was oddly calm for someone who had just been confronted by the police. It was as if she wasn’t afraid of getting punished at all. “By the way, you might want to tell the person who reported me that she can’t touch me. I’m well protected.” 

With a snort, she hung up. 

The cops grimaced at Nadine’s shameless comment. “We’ve p 

got evidence of her crime, and she isn’t even breaking a sweat!” 

In the end, Josephine went to the police precinct without Thompson. She left Ethan by the precinct entrance and insisted on going alone, knowing the storm she 

was about to face. 

She didn’t want Ethan to see her in her ugliest moments.
