Lucien nodded. "That's right. I want to know what kind of family Matthew is from."
Lucien and Dominic grumbled for a while, but in the end, Dominic leaned down and carried the dead body at the legs.
"Lift the other end. Let's hurry up and get this done."
…
In the cardroom, the lobby was lively as usual. The people playing Blackjack were experiencing a range of emotions. Some were thrilled, some were frustrated, and some were excited.
In a private room, Caleb unboxed a parcel.
Jane huffed. "You threw money at Matthew on purpose, right? Were you trying to land something big?"
Caleb stopped unpacking his delivery and looked up at Jane. "I wasn't trying to lose. When we try to score something, we always dig into their family background and how much they're worth. But since I don't know anything about him, why would I even set the bait?"
Seriously? Jane stared at Caleb in shock. "Wait, you mean he won the money on his own? Holy crap, that's hundreds of thousands of dollars. How did he pull that off?"
Caleb thought for a moment and replied, "He can't even hold his cards properly. The way he played feels like he's a beginner, so he probably only plays a few hands during the holidays. He must have won by pure luck."
Jane nodded. "Fingers crossed he shows up tomorrow. We can find out about his family background while we're at it. If it all checks out, let's play the long game and go for something big."
Caleb hummed in acknowledgment. As he finally unpacked the box, he started grumbling, "The surgery fee is reasonable, but the battery is a bit pricey. Changing it once a year costs 100 thousand dollars. It's like daylight robbery."
Jane glanced at the small box in Caleb's hand and chuckled. "Everyone's just here for money. We play cards and call it gambling, but it's all just about conning each other.
"Look at these fancy techs! These people rob you blind and still leave you in awe. That's some next-level stuff.
"I'll make sure my son puts in the effort in school. I want him to be the type who earns money from others and has them thanking him like it's an honor. That's what I call impressive."
Caleb didn't say a word and continued to unwrap his box.
Jane suddenly knitted her brows together. "Where did Dwight go?"
Caleb responded with a grin, "Don't you know him by now? If he wins, he'll take a lady out to celebrate. If he loses, he'll get two women with him to help him blow off steam. He lost a fair amount today, but the money lost is all his, not ours."
