"I'm not deceived," Lucian replied, his voice steady.

"I like her, Mom. I like everything about her."

Miranda stood up, her expression turning serious. "Lucian, do you realize how many people are eyeing your position? Do you know that George has always been scheming to take you down? Penelope nearly died trying to save me, and under all that pressure, you promised to marry her. A promise is a promise."

Lucian remained silent.

Miranda shook her head. "What's wrong with Penelope? She sacrificed so much to save me, even losing the child she was carrying for you. If that baby had lived, they'd be turning one by now."

Lucian knew this was a sore subject for Miranda. After a moment's thought, he said, "Mom, I've found evidence. The chandelier at your charity gala that almost fell on you was sabotaged. We have leads on who did it... But I've kept it from you."

He didn't want to upset her, especially since her health had been fragile, particularly during the rainy season when her condition would worsen.

"What do you mean?" Miranda asked, her voice tinged with confusion. It had been so long since the incident; why bring it up now?

"Mom, do you really think Penelope risked her life to save you? Or has her pretense over this time fooled you too?"

Miranda was incredulous. "Are you saying that Penelope was behind the sabotage? How could that be?"

"Why not?" Lucian's lips curled into a faint smirk. "Do you honestly believe she would risk her life, and the life of her unborn child, for you? What good did saving you do for Penelope?"
