Allison wrapped her arms around his waist, seeking comfort and answers.

"Why didn’t you tell me? I thought you didn’t want to go with me anymore."

"I'm sorry. It won't happen again," Lucian whispered, his voice deep and gravelly, as he bent down to kiss the top of her head. The day had thrown a curveball—he'd received a call summoning him to the Lindberg estate. After a quick chat in the old man's study, he found himself tangled in a lengthy discussion with the Flanagans in the parlor, his phone forgotten in another room.

"Just some family drama, but it's sorted now," he explained.

His hand reached out, slender fingers tracing the delicate curve of her cheek. Her skin, smooth and pale like fine porcelain, had gained a slight softness from days of resting at home. His fingers pinched gently, enjoying the jelly-like feel that he found utterly irresistible. "Let's go, we're still heading to the historic town."

He didn't want to burden Allison with the news of Penelope’s pregnancy.
