"Marc?" I exclaimed in surprise.
Marc stood there, stunned. He was looking back and forth between me and Ethan.
"Evelyn, what's going on here?" His gaze landed on our tightly clasped hands. I coughed awkwardly and tried to pull my hand away, but Ethan held it tightly.
"Marc, this is my… boyfriend, Ethan." I forced myself to introduce him. "As for the news today, it's all media speculation. We won't be getting… engaged. I'm sorry."
Marc's expression instantly darkened like the stormy sky. He stared at me intently. A flash of hurt and anger crossed his face.
"Evelyn, what does this mean?" he asked coldly. "Just a few days ago, weren't we all sweet and affectionate? How come you've suddenly changed your mind?"
Hearing this, Ethan's face also turned grim. He tightened his grip on my hand, as if silently questioning me.
I lowered my eyes, feeling guilty. I stammered, "Marc, let me explain…" But Marc didn't give me a chance to speak.
"Explain? What's there to explain?" He sneered. "Evelyn, I've given you everything, and yet, you're shamelessly flirting with another man right in front of me? I was wrong about you. You're just a deceitful bitch!"
"Enough!" Ethan could no longer hold back. He stepped in front of me protectively. "I warn you. Don't insult Evelyn like that. She's my woman. Don't you dare lay a finger on her."
The tension between Ethan and Marc was palpable. The two of them were at odds, ready to fight. I stood helplessly between them.
"Marc, I'm sorry. I should have explained sooner." I gathered my courage to speak. "Thank you for everything you've done for me. But Ethan and I have been together for a while now. This is how I feel, and I hope you can understand."
Marc's face darkened even further. His expression was filled with bitterness. He glared at us, then turned to leave.
"Well, if that's how it is, then I have nothing else to say," he said without looking back. He stormed off, leaving Ethan and me standing there in silence.
What's the relationship between you two?" Ethan questioned.
