Agnes had known Jared for years and was aware that he never used harsh words, no matter how upset. Now, for the first time, she heard him curse. His gaze was icy, each look piercing her soul. He was genuinely upset. The atmosphere turned frigid, and his voice was chilling as he said, "Agnes, are you serious?"
Agnes was tormented. She'd spoken hurtfully to Alyssa, not out of genuine sentiment, but just to hurt her. The harsh reality was that Alyssa had killed her mother, and the Whitfield family was the root of her suffering.
How could she remain Mrs. Whitfield after all this? She considered divorcing Jared. Her fear was that she might use him to seek revenge on Alyssa. She didn't want that. Her residual kindness was guiding her decision.
This had nothing to do with Jared, right? But he was Alyssa's beloved brother and the head of the Whitfield family. She couldn't be with him anymore. Her mother's death had become an insurmountable chasm, how could she be at ease being his wife and living under the same roof with her mother's killer?
She couldn't do it.
Agnes' voice was firm like never before, "I'm serious, Jared, let's get divorced. I don't love you anymore. I can't live with you anymore."
Jared suddenly stood up, taking two steps closer and grabbed her arm, "Why? Tell me why, Agnes. What did I do wrong that you want a divorce?"
