Agnes looked at Elton with clear, unwavering eyes. "It's not about forgiving you, Elton. Between us, it's not about forgiveness right now. What I care about is that you lied to me from the start. I don't know what to believe anymore—what's true, what's false. I need to figure this out on my own before I can make any decisions."
Elton's gaze darkened slightly. "So, what exactly are you doubting? Which things do you think are false? When I said your marriage with Jared isn't happy, do you think that's a lie, or are you hoping deep down that it is?"
Agnes stared at him, puzzled, and suddenly asked, "What do you mean?"
Elton immediately backtracked. "I'm sorry, Agnes. I was just rambling. Don't take it to heart."
Agnes withdrew her hand from his. "Elton, I'm exhausted. I don't want to argue with you. I'm going to grab something to eat. I'll see you later."
She turned and walked away. Elton wanted to follow her, but he stopped at the doorway, knowing it would only lead to more conflict. He clenched his fists, frustrated with himself for saying something so foolish.
Agnes had no romantic connection with Jared. By saying that, he was unintentionally pushing her towards him, which was never his intention. He was just anxious to get out of this mess. Jenny was relentlessly pursuing him, and now Jared was back in the picture, and Agnes knew about their son. It was all spiraling out of control.
