Kearney's gaze lingered on Phenix for a moment.
Finally, Kearney spoke up, "I killed Sean. If you want revenge, come after me. Let Phenix go. You know how much Sean cared about her. If you harm even a hair on her head, my brother won't forgive you, even from the grave."
Samuel let out a loud laugh. "My brother was a fool, a real fool. They say even heroes fall for a pretty face. In the end, he died because of his best friend and the woman he loved. How can I let that go without getting my revenge?"
As he spoke, Samuel walked over to Phenix, pressing a gun to her temple. "My brother took ten bullets, each one lethal. Shouldn't I take it out on her, too?"
"No!" Kearney shouted.
All his calm and composure seemed to crumble to dust in that moment.
Kearney struggled to his feet, nearly collapsing at Samuel's shoes. "It was all me. Phenix had nothing to do with it. Whatever grudges you have, take it all out on me. Let her go, and I'll give you my life."
Phenix looked at Kearney, bewildered. "Sean, what are you talking about?"
Kearney turned to her and suddenly smiled. "It's okay. This is just a dream. Close your eyes, and you'll wake up soon. Remember, it's just a dream."
To Kearney's surprise, Phenix, as if entranced, closed her eyes.
Samuel tossed the gun to the ground. "My brother took ten bullets. Here's the deal: you two owe me ten bullets. You've already taken two. This gun has eight rounds left. Split them between you, or take them all yourself. Once the gun is empty, we leave."
