Yvan didn't stick around either. He headed straight back to the banquet hall.
Madison and I exchanged a glance, both of us trying to figure out what just happened.
"What was that about?" Madison asked, furrowing her brow. "What's Yvan up to?"
"Probably something sketchy," I muttered. "Looks like Yvan's definitely planning something big. Do you think it's tied to Murphy?"
"Could be." Madison nodded. "Those two already have some history. They might be working together."
We were still talking when we heard a muffled crash echo further down the alley, followed by a woman's scream.
"Help!"
It was a bloodcurdling shriek that made my skin crawl.
Madison and I jumped, then turned to see where it came from. In the dim light, we spotted someone lying on the ground, completely still. Standing over the body was a masked figure holding a weapon.
"Oh my God!" I gasped, instinctively taking a step back. "Is t-that a person?"
Madison covered her mouth with her hand, her voice trembling. "N-No way. Did that person just get…"
We barely had a moment to take in what we'd seen before the masked figure seemed to notice us. He snapped his head up, looking straight at us.
My heart lurched, and I whipped around, pulling Madison with me as we bolted. Footsteps pounded behind us. He was chasing us with his knife in hand.
"Run!" I yelled, tearing down the alley as fast as I could.
Madison was right on my heels, breathing heavily.
"Who is that guy? Did he just kill someone? We need to call the police!" she gasped, horrified.
