"Do you think my dad would be worried about me? He wants me dead so that I won't drag him down anymore!" Vivian sniggered.
I froze. Was Murphy really that cruel toward Vivian, his own daughter? How could he treat her like that?
Vivian sneered at my silence. "What? You're shocked speechless, are you? Murphy's a cold-blooded person. He cares not about his family. Back then, he was the one who caused my mom's death. I'm just a piece that he can sacrifice anytime in his game of chess."
A tinge of sorrow flashed across her eyes when she said that. "Evelyn, I know you hate me. But do you know just how lucky you are compared to me? Zach is your biological son, and although he's in Murphy's hands for now, he still has a loving mother like you."
She continued, "On the other hand, Murphy has always seen me as a bargaining chip. I've never felt any affection from him."
Stunned at this sudden revelation, I stared at Vivian in silence, my heart a mix of emotions. The thing that surprised me the most was that she could tell that it was me.
Why did she do all those horrible things to me? Was it because she was forced into doing them?
Maybe it was Murphy who ordered Vivian to blackmail Ethan. Or maybe Vivian was simply scheming to trick me.
After mulling it over, I said, "I don't hate you, Vivian. We have nothing against each other. We ended up in this situation all because we had different interests. If Murphy wasn't involved in this, we might even have become friends."
I laughed satirically. My eyes felt a little wet from the tears that stung my eyes.
Vivian seemed shocked after hearing what I said. A moment later, she smiled wryly and said, "You're right. We're poor and pitiable. There is no need to torment each other anymore."
She paused and asked, "But what about Zachary? What will you do?"
A determined look returned to my face as I took a deep breath. "You don't have to worry about that. Just stay here and wait for the show to begin."
