My phone rang. "Hello, who's this?" My voice was trembling.
"Evelyn, it's me." A familiar voice came through the other end.
I froze instantly and almost dropped my phone. "E-Ethan?"
"I want to know whether you're carrying my child."
My pupils contracted, and my heart raced in my chest. How did he know? Wasn't he at work?
"Did you have someone follow me?" I asked shakingly.
"I'm your husband, aren't I?" Ethan replied, as if it were a matter of course. "Now, tell me, are you pregnant?"
I gritted my teeth and fell silent for a long moment.
"Answer me, Evelyn." His tone was commanding and firm.
I closed my eyes. A bitter smile formed as I spoke, "Yes, I'm pregnant. But I won't keep this child."
"What did you say?" Ethan shouted. I could almost hear his rage on the other end of the line. "Try touching my child and see what happens!"
My heart sank, and I forced a bitter laugh. "Isn't this what you've always wanted? A child? Now you've got what you wished for. Shouldn't you be satisfied? A tool to tie me down?"
Ethan fell silent for a moment, then sighed deeply. For the first time, his voice carried a weariness and helplessness I had never heard before. My heart ached, and tears welled up in my eyes.
"Ethan, it's not that I don't want to have a child with you. I'm just… I'm afraid."
"What are you afraid of?" Ethan asked with concern.
