Maurice was knocked out and tied up. A torn piece of fabric was shoved into his mouth to stop him from biting his tongue. His current state was utterly pathetic. Yet not a single person on the scene could find it in themselves to laugh.

One of Maurice's men asked cautiously, "Ms. Fuller, is Mr. Glovers… better now?"

"Of course not. Nothing's ever that simple." Felicia rubbed her temples, feeling an ache creeping in.

She had checked his pulse earlier, and she could tell that Maurice had used a modified version of the twin venomous creatures on himself and her. This variation was brutally effective. Once the link was established, there was no way to break it.

This meant Maurice had essentially taken her place, shouldering all the torment and eventual fatality from the Heart Eater inside her.

There was no cure.

If this played out to its grim conclusion, Maurice's life would be the price. How would she ever repay that?

"So… you're saying there's no way to save him?" Maurice's men exchanged pale, stricken glances. One particularly loyal bodyguard looked like he was about to cry.

Their boss was still alive, yet it felt like a death sentence had already been declared. Seeing Maurice twitch in pain, his brows furrowing even in unconsciousness, filled them with a suffocating sense of helplessness.

Felicia didn't answer directly, but her silence was enough of a reply. She had already made up her mind and was quietly working through her thoughts.

Scarlet broke the silence. "Boss, we should get out of here."

With Stephan and his men gone and Imogen being rushed to the hospital, the Russel family's forces had fully retreated. Even the helicopter was nowhere in sight.

Still, Scarlet hadn't forgotten about the other dangerous parties lurking on this mountain. If they ran into them again, things could get dicey.
