Felicia's mind was racing. Thoughts surged through her mind like fireworks suddenly exploding in the sky—chaotic, dazzling, and deafening.
She knew Stephan was beginning to suspect something, and she understood his doubts and concerns. However, she didn't know how to explain.
Johanna using the Heart Eater as a threat clearly meant she was connected to that robed figure. Or perhaps the robed figure was using Johanna to do his bidding.
That night in the forest, when they tried to rescue the women, they failed to capture the robed figure. This time, it might be their chance.
Felicia hesitated for a moment before responding, "I've had dealings with the people behind all this before. They—"
She didn't get to finish.
One of the guards who had been tracking Johanna's whereabouts rushed in to report, "We've located Johanna's phone. The signal disappeared near a gas station about nine miles from Mount Farstone."
Stephan glanced at Felicia, his expression deep and unreadable. Whatever she had been about to say was completely cut off. He turned to the guard and ordered, "Seal off all entrances and exits to Mount Farstone. Do it discreetly. Make sure they don't notice."
"Yes, sir!"
At a time like this, no one could afford to take chances with Caleb's life.
The Heart Eater could resurface at any moment. For others, it might seem distant and intangible, but for Imogen, it was an immediate, terrifying reality. She hugged Caleb close and kissed his forehead, determination flashing in her tear-streaked eyes.
"I'll go meet her," she said firmly.
She and Johanna had unresolved grievances, and this confrontation was inevitable.
Felicia spoke up, "I'll go with you."
The true target of those behind the scenes was Felicia herself.
