Chapter 67
“Our boss is out for the next couple of days. He’ll be back Wednesday afternoon,” the interviewer explained when he noticed Victoria’s hesitation. “If you’re available, we can schedule your final interview for 1:00 pm that day.”
“I’m available,” Victoria replied.
Laura’s surgery was this afternoon. Even if there were complications, she’d have all of Tuesday to deal with them.
She had no idea how much the post–surgery care would cost, so securing this job was crucial. She just hoped Leon wouldn’t interfere this time.
As soon as the interview ended, Victoria rushed to the hospital. The surgery wasn’t until the afternoon, but she couldn’t stop worrying
It was around 11:00 am when she arrived. Leslie greeted her briefly, his tone no different from usual “You’ve been informed about the surgery, right?
“Yes.” Victoria sat across from him, her usually soft gaze clouded with worry. “What are the chances?”
“,“he answered honestly.
Victoria’s hear tightened.
For years, Laura had been lying in bed, unresponsive. Although she couldn’t reply to anything Victoria said, her occasional reflexive movements were enough to remind Victoria that she was still alive. But if the surgery failed, Laura would have to rely on a ventilator for life.
Victoria didn’t dare think about that possibly.
“We’ll do everything we can to save your mother,” Leslie said gently, his voice soothing. Over the years, he had witnessed Victoria’s unwavering devotion to Laura. “God blesses the good people.”
“Use whatever is necessary during the operation. Don’t worry about whether I can afford it. I’ll find a way to pay for it later,” Victoria said, forcing a smile.
She low well that talk of “God” was just a comfort, nothing more.
