Bride Behind the Mask novel Chapter 845

That evening, Marguerite finally clocked out of work.

As she stepped out of the building, she spotted Maurice's car parked right in front. He was leaning casually against the hood, puffing on a cigarette—a rare sight since he wasn't usually a smoker.

It was uncanny. Even though Maurice and Frederick looked nothing alike, the way Maurice smoked reminded her so much of Frederick. For the first time, she saw a flicker of Frederick in Maurice.

Without acknowledging him, she slipped into the passenger seat. Maurice stubbed out his cigarette and got in beside her. Behind them, her colleague, Tim, spotted Maurice and quickly hailed a cab, visibly relieved.

Maurice drove them around the city without heading home. "There's a new couple's restaurant on Main Street. Want to give it a try?"

Marguerite's eyes remained indifferent. "A couple's restaurant? Do you really think I have the appetite for that?"

"How would you know if you don't try?" he countered.

She turned her gaze to the window, saying nothing. Maurice chuckled to himself, "If you're not interested, we'll just head home."

Marguerite couldn't stand how Maurice always spoke to her like they were family. Even though these days, he'd been nothing but indulgent.

He never forced her to do what she didn't want to. If she didn't feel like talking, he respected her silence. Even Janie had mentioned, quite pointedly, that Maurice had never treated any other woman this well.

Well?

Marguerite never felt it.

She retorted instantly, "Would you call it 'good' if a man hired someone to tail you constantly, leaving you unable to go home or see your family?"

Janie wouldn't back down, "But Mr. Winston spends a lot on you. You glance at something, and he'd buy the whole store if he could. Isn't that good?"

Marguerite was livid, "Do you think I lack money?"
