The man standing at the doorway blinked rapidly, his eyes glassy with unshed tears.
From where he stood, looking in, the two people inside seemed as if they'd just returned from the brink of death, clinging to each other, overcome with relief and the joy of being alive.
They had faced life and death together—of course they understood, better than anyone, just how much they meant to each other.
So, really, what was he to them?
He’d rushed here, desperate, only to leave in defeat. Maybe that’s how his story was always meant to end.
With a heavy heart, he stole one last glance at Marguerite—reluctant, bitter, but resolute—then turned and walked away.
His steps were uneven as he made his way back to the parking lot. Ike, having heard the news, was already waiting by his car.
Silas slid into the passenger seat. Ike immediately began his report: “Mr. Ward, the story you saw online isn’t accurate. Marguerite wasn’t injured. Maurice took the bullet for her.”
Took a bullet for her? Of course he did.
Even in the end, Silas felt a flicker of gratitude that Marguerite had come through unharmed.
“They really are star-crossed lovers, aren’t they?”
Silas’s face was expressionless, but Ike could feel the weight of his sorrow.
At that moment, Mr. Ward’s heart must have shattered completely.
True despair always arrives in silence.
Ike had no idea what to say, nothing that could possibly soothe Mr. Ward’s pain.
As he hesitated, Silas’s phone started to ring.
Moving as if in a trance, Silas put the call on speaker. Violet’s anxious voice burst through the silence.
“Silas, where did you go? You just left without a word—this is our wedding! Do you have any idea how furious my mom is? She was so angry she had a heart attack! The doctors barely managed to save her!”
