Chapter 60
Winnie sheered. “It’s very easy to fake a receipt in this day and age. And people who like wearing fake products would of course carry around the receipts.”
Some of Winnie’s friends came to her support and said, “Oh, she’s the one wearing the fake products and making the most noise about having the same pair of shoes. Has she got no shame?
“I think this makes more sense. I don’t think Mrs. Forbes is the type to cheat.”
“Who’s this woman? How did she get in anyway?”
Nadine almost bit the roof when she heard the stinging remarks from the crowd.
It was impossible for Winnie not to recognize that pair of shoes if she was a loyal Thompson fan! It was obvious that she defamed her to protect Josephine. Each of those people hurling snide remarks and bullying her right now must be dying to suck up to Winnie.
At that thought, Nadine started tearing up as she bit her lips resentfully.
“Mrs. Shaw, I came to your birthday party with good intentions so I could wish you a happy birthday. I also did my best to pick a present that I think is most suitable for you. How could you throw me under the bus to protect Mrs. Forbes‘ reputation?”
She took out her phone and hurriedly clicked into her photo gallery.
“Look closely. You can find this pair of shoes on the internet. It is released as a limited edition, but it’s not the only pair available. I might be poor but I will never wear take products. I’m still a hundred times better than people who are stingy but trying their best to pass off a limited edition pair of shoes as the one–and–only pair available”
As soon as she finished her sentence, she turned around to leave. However, she accidentally stepped on the corner of her dress and tripped. She fell to the floor clumsily
“Watch out!” Zayn’s expression changed and he immediately rushed forward to help her up. He looked at her angrily, but there was also a hint of tenderness in his gaze
“What are you going on about? Mrs. Shaw was just joking with you. Look at you, what a crybaby. You’ve made yourself a laughing stock.” He brushed the dust off Nadine as he said that.
Nadine started sobbing as she said, “I didn’t want it to be like this either. What can I do if they are just bullying me based on their social status? Mr. Forbes, I am sorry. You gave me this opportunity to gain a new experience and wish Mrs. Shaw a happy birthday. But I had no idea they would be so mean!”
Zayn sighed softly. He wanted to comfort her by caressing her hair. However, they were surrounded by people. He could only ball his hand into a tight fist and put it behind her.
“It’s not your fault. He tumed
at Winnie after he said that. “Mrs. Shaw, it was really Josephine who made the mistake about the shoes. I will apologize on her behalf. You don’t have to hurt others just to protect Josephine.”
He added, “Josephine, you’re at fault too. You should just own up to y

to your mistake. Why did you have to perpetuate the lie?”
Even Winnie would do anything in her power to protect her in a situation like this. How could he stick up for Nadine by criticizing her?
