Steven felt a piercing pain in his chest. He said, "In the past, I was an obedient son. When you told me that Annalise was bad and Jessica was good, I believed in you. I distanced myself from Annalise and got closer to Jessica, but look at how things have become."

After barely propping himself up to a sitting position, Steven gazed at Chloe.

He snarled, "In the end, Annalise left me and found a better man. Meanwhile, all I can do is sit at home in misery and think about her!"

Chloe hadn't expected Steven to suddenly lash out.

She said awkwardly, "Well, I didn't know you liked Annalise. It seemed to us that you were reluctantly living with Annalise and that you only had eyes for Jessica. If Annalise wasn't your wife, you would've reunited with Jessica. I thought you loved Jessica…"

Hearing that, Steven laughed at himself mockingly. That meant he was fully responsible for how things had become, and there was no one else to blame. Steven looked away.

However, Chloe continued nonchalantly, "You're unhappy now because Annalise found a better man and is living a better life after divorce. If she didn't meet Zane Huxham and could only work as a waitress or kitchen assistant, would you still be so regretful?"

Steven tried to imagine what Chloe described. He imagined himself driving an expensive car to dinner, only to encounter Annalise who was working at the restaurant as a waitress. He also imagined Annalise painstakingly washing stacks of dishes.

At that thought, Steven felt a sharp pain in his chest again. He knew full well that a woman like Annalise would never fall into the kind of misery as Chloe described.

Annalise was a university graduate; she was emotionally stable and had good character. Even when she was a housewife, she took good care of the family. If Annalise had any intentions to do so, she could work as a housekeeper, and she would still be highly sought-after.
