Casper leaned back, savoring a rare moment of tranquility. His mind replayed the scenes from the office, where everyone's faces had radiated joy and enthusiasm.
It warmed his heart, marking the first time since his family's bankruptcy that he'd experienced such a welcoming atmosphere. And it was all thanks to Zane.
He silently promised to work harder and prove worthy of Zane's investment in him.
When Casper opened his phone, he was surprised to see messages from Jessica. It was unlike her, typically so frugal, to offer him money. Even knowing it might just be her way of smoothing things over, he couldn't help but feel touched. Clearly, she treated him differently.
Any lingering resentment he'd harbored toward Jessica over the past few days seemed to evaporate.
He replied, "I'm at Huxham Corporation. I was in a meeting and didn't see your messages earlier."
Then, feeling playful, he added, "Are you sure you want to give me money?"
Jessica stared at her screen, puzzled by Casper's response. Couldn't he tell she was just being polite? Surely, he wasn't actually asking for money?
She bit her lip, conflicted. It could spell the end of their relationship if she didn't respond. And if Casper became successful in the future, she'd have no part in it.
What troubled Jessica most was the dilemma of how to respond. If she said no, Casper would realize she was just being polite. But if she agreed and he really asked for money, what then? Should she just transfer the funds?
After much deliberation, Jessica decided to take the plunge. One couldn't catch a wolf without risking the bait, after all.
She replied, "How much do you need?"
Casper was surprised by her response. Was Jessica not joking?
