Pondering for a moment, Regina pulled the file of the person in question and decided to confront Imogen directly.
"Hey, look who's back! Regina, sweetie, did you grab a bite already? How's the job treating you these days?"
Every time Regina came home, Imogen would ask her these questions as if reciting a script. Regina's ears could practically form calluses from hearing them so often. Besides, it wasn't like Imogen truly wanted to know the answers. Once she asked these questions within earshot of the servants, she could check off her 'duty' as complete.
Imogen turned to head back to her own room. Regina was keen on avoiding her, and she wasn't exactly itching to mingle with Regina either.
"Wait."
To her surprise, Regina blocked her path.
"What is it now, Miss? I haven't crossed you lately, have I?"
Before shipping this thorn in her side off to wedlock, Imogen had resolved to take it easy for a while. The farther from her, the better. Who knew what kind of trap the little viper was laying for them?
"Feeling guilty, are we?" Regina crossed her arms and eyed Imogen, who was decked out in jewels from head to toe, looking every bit the nouveau riche. Maybe she was just one of those people who flaunt what they lack the most.
Imogen's face soured; she, too, remembered the last time Regina had turned the tables on her, and Francis's scolding words seemed to echo in her ears.
"What kind of joke is this? I pride myself on fulfilling my duties as a stepmother. I've got nothing to be guilty about. On the other hand, you should start thinking about toning down your antics and planning your own future properly."
Regina rolled her eyes. "I'm not like you; I don't need a man to lean on."
"You! What are you trying to say?" Imogen was livid. This insolent brat always managed to stoke her anger with just a few words.
"Who's Domingo Skinner?"
