Imogen rubbed her temples. "Go ahead. What is it?"
The maid confessed, "Ms. Russell, when we changed Mr. Caleb's clothes earlier, we noticed a fresh scratch on his skin. It was caused by a fingernail and seems to have been made very recently!"
"What?" Imogen thought she had misheard. She instinctively responded, "How could you be so careless?"
"Ms. Russell, it wasn't us! All of us have kept our nails trimmed short and smooth for Mr. Caleb. There's no way we could have scratched him!" the maid defended.
"So, you're saying..." Imogen froze, her mind racing. Apart from herself, the maids, and the nanny, only two other people had been near Caleb recently.
One was Archie, and the other was Johanna.
"Mr. Rosario didn't hold the baby just now. Only Ms. Johanna lingered by the cradle," the maid added cautiously.
As Imogen's expression darkened, the maid braced herself. "Perhaps Ms. Johanna accidentally scratched Mr. Caleb while playing with him. Her nails might've been too long—"
"That's enough!" Imogen's voice cut through the room, startling Caleb in the cradle.
The maid quickly soothed him with practiced ease until he drifted back to sleep.
The nanny, standing to the side, was tense.
Now, she understood why the maid had refrained from mentioning this earlier and instead chose to report it privately. It was because Imogen wouldn't believe them otherwise.
After all, one was her husband, and the other was her sister-in-law. They were too close for her to take the word of outsiders over them.
The maid remained silent.
