Skylar smiled and said, "Let's go to bed. I'm tired."
…
As soon as Elsie stumbled home in a daze, her father grabbed her arm.
"You said Joe likes you and that he'll help our family so we don't need to fear Alban anymore, right? So what did Joe say? How is he going to help us? Will he give our company some big contracts?"
If it were Alban asking her this, Elsie wouldn't have minded as much. But it was her father.
This made Elsie feel like nothing more than a cheap commodity, traded at will.
"Why aren't you saying anything? Didn't you confidently tell your elder brother about it yesterday? I couldn't believe it when he told me that Joe actually took a liking to you!
"Do you have any idea how many people in Jipsburg have tried to cozy up to him using women, only for that to fail? But it looks like my daughter pulled it off!" Gary Shepard, Elsie's father's face lit up with excitement.
His words carried the joy of someone believing that their family was finally about to climb to a higher social class, no longer at the mercy of Alban Rowe.
Elsie's face turned pale, her mind blank. "No, no! Joe doesn't like me at all! He treats me like a joke! Are you satisfied now?"
How could she have a father like this? A father who encouraged her to become Joe's mistress!
No, it didn't start with Joe. He had first pushed her toward Alban!
Knowing full well that she would just be another plaything to Alban, her father had still sent her off without hesitation—for the sake of the company and his own gains.
"What? What are you saying? Didn't you tell me you had already made Joe fall for you?" Gary was taken aback.
He had been dreaming about it the whole day. But now that dream was shattered before it could come true.
"Are you even my father? Are you? When you pushed me toward Alban, did you ever consider that he's even older than you? How could I have a father like you? You're willing to sell your own daughter for your own gain!" Elsie shouted angrily.
But as soon as the words left her mouth, she was slapped across the face.
