40 minutes later, Skylar and Steven arrived at the police station almost simultaneously. The bodyguards Aiken had sent to protect Mona quietly observed from the sidelines.
When they saw Skylar, the three of them nodded in her direction. Skylar returned the gesture. Their efforts had been crucial—without them, Mona might not have been rescued so swiftly.
Even though Mona had called the police, response time was always a factor. Neither Ruth nor Jed had anticipated someone secretly guarding Mona, nor had they expected her to remain so composed and immediately alert the authorities.
Mona had stayed remarkably calm throughout the ordeal. The moment she saw Steven, she walked directly to him, and the couple embraced tightly.
Steven, still visibly shaken, carefully examined Mona. "Did they hurt you?" he asked.
Mona shook her head. "Don't worry. I'm fine. I could tell this was their first time abducting someone. They were inexperienced. And I had set up my phone before I left, so when I realized something was off, I called the police right away."
"That's a relief," Steven said, the tension lifting from his shoulders. But his eyes were still dark with anger.
Mona suddenly noticed Skylar and turned to her. "I'm sorry to cause you worry. I heard from the people who rescued me that you had them secretly protect me a few days ago, fearing something might happen."
She truly felt grateful to Skylar. After learning that Ruth had been secretly following her, Skylar had arranged for someone to protect her. If it hadn't been for Ruth's attempt to abduct her, Mona might never have realized how much Skylar cared about her well-being.
Skylar smiled and said, "I just thought Ruth had lost her mind and might hurt you. I hope you don't mind."
Mona shook her head. "How could I mind? I know you were looking out for me."
