The furrow in Ian's brow deepened as he tossed aside his cigarette.

"Didn't Drew say Maja was the child born out of Clara's infidelity?"

Fitch rifled through the documents in front of him, the truth becoming even more unbearable.

"Seemed like it. Clara was a woman of the night over in Crystalbrook Valley. You know how things were over twenty years ago; the law wasn't as tight as it is now. Drew was a thug who landed himself in prison for a few years for messing with the neighbor's daughter. When he got out, he married Clara. Drew had a crippled brother in the family. Drew had caught Clara seducing his brother, and he suspected that when Maja was born, she might be his brother's child. That's why he sold her away. "You should sleep."
