Of course she was nervous—there was no pretending otherwise.
Even though Marguerite tried her best to stay composed, her heart raced wildly, refusing to settle. Instinctively, she balled her clammy hands into fists, her lips parting in silent hesitation before she forced herself to sound calm.
“Who called?”
Her reaction was anything but subtle. Maurice chuckled softly, reaching over to brush her cheek. “Are you feeling alright? You look a little pale.”
Marguerite was nearly frantic with worry, but Maurice’s nonchalant attitude only made her mind spin with possibilities.
Was it really Silas who’d called? Why couldn’t Maurice just give her a straight answer?
The tension stretched between them for what felt like ages, until at last Maurice let out a low laugh. “The first batch of Polar Radiance has finished production. Chuck was calling to ask about the date for the launch event.”
Marguerite let out a silent breath of relief.
Unbelievable.
She knew it—Maurice was still testing her.
It had just been Chuck on the phone, but he managed to make it feel like some sort of spy drama, nearly scaring her to death.
Marguerite dug her phone out of her purse. “I’ll call him back.”
“No need,” Maurice replied. “I already set the date.”
She blinked, taken aback, and turned to look at him. “You set it? When?”
“Next Wednesday.”
Next Wednesday?
Marguerite’s face went even paler.
Next Wednesday was also the day of Silas and Violet Reed’s wedding.
And Maurice had deliberately scheduled the launch on the very same day. It was hard not to read into that.
Suspicion prickled through her. Had he planted someone at Stella’s clinic, too?
Marguerite’s gaze sharpened, confusion furrowing her brow. “Why Wednesday?”
Maurice replied smoothly, “Astrologically, Wednesday is ruled by Mercury.”
“Mercury?”
He gave a small nod, as if lecturing. “In ancient times, people revered the stars. The aurora is a kind of celestial phenomenon—perfect symbolism for our launch, don’t you think?”
Marguerite met his eyes, unsure how much of that explanation to believe.
She fell silent, deciding not to press further.
