The voice was so young and unexpected that Marguerite was momentarily taken aback. She turned her head and saw a chubby little figure sitting on the stool next to her, barely tall enough to peek over the table.
The child wore a pink kindergarten uniform dress, with two pigtails dangling beside her cherubic cheeks, her plump little face so adorable that it was hard not to smile, and even harder to resist the urge to pinch her cheeks.
Wasn't this Silas's daughter, Margot?
What on earth was this little girl doing here? And where on earth was her dad?
Marguerite's mind buzzed with questions, but before she could voice any, Margot picked up the glass of lemonade by Marguerite's hand and took a couple of big gulps. Then, looking directly at the man across the table, she said:
"Uncle, you're thirty but look older than forty. You want to marry a young woman fresh out of college, but she might not want to marry you!"
Most adults would dismiss a child's words, but this man, whose name was Charlie, took the bait and responded earnestly to little Margot.
"Why wouldn't they want to? Meeting someone like me right out of school, I can teach them about life, help them avoid pitfalls. And, let me tell you, I'm a self-made man, not like those trust fund babies!"
"Self-made? Or did you make it with the help of a woman?" Margot's innocent face was as guileless as ever.
Charlie's expression fell. "Kid, do you even know what you're saying?"
"I'm not wrong! You just said you want to buy a house with her and take care of your parents, but with house prices in Cresthaven so high, you don't seem like someone who can afford it. In the end, wouldn't she have to pay? And you don't even want to put her name on the deed. What kind of 'self-made' is that?"
"Hey, don't make it sound like I'm after her money!"
