Monday, Kindergarten.
As soon as Margot stepped into the classroom, Hayes wasted no time. He slapped a printed design of a waffle down on her desk, not bothering with any kind of introduction.
Margot pouted, blinking her big eyes. "What's this for?"
Hayes dragged a chair over, straddling it in front of her. He tapped the design again. "I want you to draw this."
His voice wasn't exactly quiet, and it caught the attention of the other kids in the class.
Manley, worried that Hayes might upset Margot, hurried over to explain. "He doesn't mean anything bad by it. He just wants you to draw a picture."
Margot looked up with her innocent face, glancing between Manley and Hayes. "Do I have to draw it exactly the same?"
Hayes raised an eyebrow coolly. "You think you can draw it exactly the same?"
Margot shrugged, nonchalantly nibbling on her finger. "How would I know? I haven't started yet!"
Hayes quickly handed her a blank sheet of paper, his tone softening a bit. "Well, go ahead and start now... use a pencil..."
Margot cast a sideways look at Hayes, clearly reluctant, but she took the blank paper, eyeing the design and then the paper.
She felt a bit lost.
How was she supposed to do this?
Holding the pencil, she hesitated, her big round eyes darting around. Then she decided to overlay the blank paper on the design, intending to trace it.
Oops!
Why can't I see the design underneath?
Margot glanced around, then grabbed both sheets and waddled over to the window. Pressing them against the glass, sunlight streamed through, revealing the waffle design on the paper. Margot picked up her pencil and began tracing quickly.
Hayes hurried over to stop her, exclaiming, "That's not how you're supposed to do it... you need to draw it yourself!"
