Steven was left speechless.
Zane took his chance, adding, "If you had shown a little more kindness and put more effort into making Anna feel loved, she wouldn't have walked away. You wouldn't be drowning in regret and bitterness now."
Steven felt a crushing weight in his chest. He wanted to argue, to claim that Zane was wrong, but something inside him whispered that Zane's words were spot on.
Annalise had been disappointed in Steven. But if he had just shown a hint of decency and made a real effort for her, she might have reconsidered, especially for Zachary's sake.
She would have endured the situation to give Zachary a stable, full childhood.
Steven pursed his lips, unable to find the words.
