As Elaine spoke, she said very solemnly, “You two cannot let me go back on my word when it comes to this kind of matter!”
Claire looked at Charlie and asked, “Honey, what do you think?”
Charlie smiled faintly and said, “Since Mom has already made an agreement with others, it would really be inappropriate for us not to go.”
Elaine hurriedly nodded and blurted out, “My dear son-in-law is indeed the best at the most critical moment!”
After that, she quickly seized the opportunity and said, “This matter is settled, then. We will go there together at six o’clock in the evening tomorrow. Claire, you can attend your class as usual tomorrow, and my dear son-in-law can come and buy some gifts with me. It’s our first time visiting someone’s house, so it’d not be good for us to go empty-handed.”
When Claire saw that Charlie had agreed, she could not say anything else. So, she nodded and said, “Okay, then.”

The following afternoon, Elaine brought Charlie with her as they drove to downtown Providence.
Elaine picked and chose from several gift shops, and at Charlie’s suggestion, she finally bought a set of exquisite tableware worth several hundred dollars as a gift.
Charlie felt that when visiting a person’s home as an ordinary friend, the gift should not be too expensive. Otherwise, it would not seem so pure anymore.
