Haillie looked down at Ellinor's pitiful state, her eyes filled with icy disdain. "You think you can stir up trouble between me and Patricia? Do you seriously believe I'd buy your crap? Ellinor, you sly fox, you had this coming!"
After making sure that Ellinor wouldn't be waking up any time ever again, Haillie put on her best scared face, and like a bat out of hell, she ran into the Blanchet family's house, screaming at the top of her lungs, "It's a disaster, Putnam, Marissa, Veronica! Get out here! Ellinor's been hit by a car!"
Devin was the first one to race out, his face a picture of shock, "Haillie, what did you just say?"
Haillie sobbed and said, "Just now, after Ellinor saw me out, I told her she didn't have to walk me home. But she insisted, wouldn't let me go without seeing me into a cab. I couldn't refuse, so I let her walk me. But out of nowhere, a car came roaring out of an alley and ran her over before speeding off!"
"What?!"
Marissa and Putnam, who had rushed out at the sound of the commotion, heard Haillie's tale. Marissa turned as white as a ghost, nearly passing out. Luckily, Putnam, who was in a wheelchair, was quick to catch her before she fell.
Putnam, the calmer of the two, asked, "Where's the girl now? How is she?"
Haillie, tears streaming down her face, answered, "Ellinor's outside, there's so much blood. I tried CPR, but no response..."
Marissa clutched her chest as if a heart attack was imminent.
Putnam furrowed his brow and asked, "Did you call an ambulance?"
In a panic, Haillie shook her head and said, "No, I was too frantic, I forgot... I'll call one now..."
Putnam sternly ordered Devin, "Go check on Ellinor. Before the ambulance arrives, get our family doctor to assess the situation!"
