Maja and Emmery had been each other's first love since their teenage years. They’d been through so much together that they were like family—love and kinship all wrapped up into one. There was no way she'd let anyone hurt her beloved, her “family,” without seeking justice.
In Emmery's eyes, Maja was the one he trusted and cared for the most. With all his half-brothers and the chaos of the Nettleton family, further complicated by his mother's influence, Maja was his refuge.
Maja once said, "When I first got with him, it was to stand up for you. They all looked down on us Martins, like we were nothing. I wanted to show them that with me around, no one could push us around. But you know, when someone cherishes a girl for so long, she can really fall in love. Once she does, her heart’s his forever. Without him, all that's left is pain. Annie, have you forgotten how heartbroken you were?"
"But I moved on. I've fallen for Conner now," Annie tried to shake her sister from her stubbornness.
The man eavesdropping in the car felt like he'd been hit with a sledgehammer.
His assistant turned back, eyeing the boss in the backseat, "Wow, boss, Ms. Annie really does love you. We thought you were just talking big."
"Keep quiet if you want to live!"
Conner watched the sisters through the car window.
Maja burst into laughter like she'd heard the funniest joke, "Oh, you love him, huh? How much? Would you really give up everything for Conner, even being a cop?"
"I would," Annie replied, her voice steady.
Annie wouldn’t waver in declaring her love for Conner to her sister—she saw it as the only way to get Maja to back off.
