She and Mindy were cousin sisters.
Even though Mindy was an orphan, she had been staying with the Shaw family since young and Old Master Shaw loved her very much. Hence, even though she was an orphan, her high position in the Mann family allowed her to be arrogant.
Besides, the Mann family accounted for nothing. In South City, the Manns weren’t even considered middle class. All they had was a four-bedroom old house in the city. Ruth's mother was a seamstress in a textile factory, and her father was no more than the owner of a little supermarket.
Initially, like every other normal citizen, Ruth was destined to work at an entry-level job after graduating college, starting from the bottom. By the time she had finally reached the managerial level, she would be old and fat. But because of her cousin Mindy, their family enjoyed a huge change. The most obvious was Ruth, who enjoyed a position in the company because of her cousin. Mindy even purposely requested her cousin Marcus to take care of Ruth. So, even though her family background was nothing to boast about in the company, everyone knew about her and treated her like a princess.
Ruth thoroughly enjoyed her position as well. In her daze, she almost convinced herself that she was the
daughter of a famous family in South City, but only when she talked on the phone with her cousin Mindy, did she deeply realize the difference between her and her cousin.
Because of her relationship with the Shaws, Mindy could pick her husband from amongst the eligible bachelors of high society. Initially, Mindy was supposed to marry the richest man in South City, the crownless king Sebastian Ford. But because he was already engaged, she had no choice but to choose Nigel.
But Ruth didn't stand a chance even with a man like Nigel. This was the difference between her and her cousin. Even though they both shared the same family name, Mindy blended seamlessly into high society. Mindy could look down on her aunt and uncle arrogantly, even unscrupulously treating her cousin Ruth like her servant.
Whereas she, Ruth Mann, had nothing.
