"I was the one who brought everything on myself."
"Don't say that about yourself, Eevonne," Kingston comforted her.
Eevonne shook her head. "That truly was my unforgivable mistake. I truly had brought it on myself. I originally thought that asking for a raise could ease my financial strain. My salary indeed was raised, and I was promoted, but there was a three months probation period. In those three months, if I could do the job well, only then would my salary be raised as high as the amount that the human resource department had promised me. Also, only then could I truly keep my position. Initially, to the human resource department and my direct superior, that wasn't anything difficult. It was just a formality. That's because, to a person who is proficient in Spanish, it would be the easiest task for them. However, to me, it was as hard as doing the impossible.
However, I didn't dare to ask anybody in the company for help as I was afraid I would give myself away. Later, I paid a fortune to hire a professional translator. Just one single order with only a few pages, I had to spend a few thousand dollars hiring a professional translator to translate for me."
"Gosh, then wouldn't your salary..." Kingston had almost figured out the consequences.
"That's right. The raise that I got not only did not ease my pressure but because I had to spend money to hire an external translator, it made it even more difficult for me to make ends meet. Not only that but
there was an even more troublesome matter. The orders that our company received can’t actually be finalized in just one sitting. We needed to communicate with the client a few times, and every time, there would be different revisions. It would be on the lesser end if a single order was revised a couple of times, and it could go as many as five or six times. Even though the majority of the contents were the same, with every revision, I still needed a professional translator to help me translate. When I pay for the professional translator, they wouldn’t only charge me for the revised parts just because the majority of the contents were the same. They charge me by the number of times they have to translate. In that situation, my debt accumulated to as high as five thousand dollars after a month. At that time, I was already very tight on money. I was already spending as little as I could on
food every day. Also, the matter became a huge burden on my mind that almost suffocated me. The kind of mental pressure was already severely affecting my work. Also, my company started to pick up on something. Every time we received an order, I could not translate them at any time in the company. Instead, I had to bring it home. When I was only one month away from being officially promoted, the human resource department and my superior started to take notice of me. At first, they were only investigating me in secret."
