"What are you trying to boast about, Ruth? Are you boasting about your integrity or your disdainfulness? Do you know if you boast like that, you're just gambling with your sons' lives? Bullshit, Ryan Poole!
Since when have I gambled with my sons' lives? I admit that my sons are not living as comfortably as they did when they lived with the Poole family when they were with me. However, I've given them everything that I could give! No matter how willful and how unreasonable I am, I will never let my sons suffer no matter what! Ryan Poole, you’ve gone overboard!" Ruth actually cried because of what Ryan had said about her.
When she heard what Ryan had said, she was actually reflecting on herself.
Ryan was right. She was indeed a little selfcentered. She never took the big picture into consideration, and she had always felt like she was making compromises for the greater good.
However, Ryan said that she had mistreated her sons and had been gambling with their lives. That was an absolute vicious slander.
"Ryan Poole!" Ruth cried. "I know that even if I had just left you for a day, you will be surrounded by a large group of girls. You don't care about me at all! You can rest assured that no matter how lowly I am, I will never pester you at all. You don't have to use my sons to slander me at all! No matter how inhumane I am, I will never gamble with my sons! Ryan Poole, don't judge me in a bad light against your sinister standards!" "I see you've become quite an eloquent speaker in these few months that you were separated.”
At that moment, Ryan suddenly was not angry anymore. He never wanted to lose his temper, to begin with. He has just been pushed too far by Ruth.
Ruth still has plenty of merits. To put it bluntly, she had only run away from home because she was feeling inferior. She had been used to being unreasonable and was just not used to being restrained.
