I was silent for a short while as well. After giving it some thought, I looked back at him and uttered, "It's illegal of you to take any one of these children away. They are still underage and thus they are still under the protection of the law. Therefore, it's impossible for you to take any of them with you."
Rick narrowed his eyes at me, "I lost my son and spent a hundred thousand dollars for nothing. Do you think I am going to turn a blind eye to this? How dumb do you think I am?"
Instead of refuting his words, I just answered, "Of course not. If you trust me, you might as well listen to my opinion."
He narrowed his eyes and replied, "Alright, speak." "There's nothing we can do about your son's death. The person who murdered your son should be the one to take full responsibility for this, but Susan has fled and she is nowhere to be found. Therefore, the only thing we can do now is to discuss this like civilized people and try to figure out a solution that both of you would be satisfied with. What I mean is the Hathaway family should compensate the betrothal money as they are obliged to do that."
Rick snorted, "I'm not short on cash."
I smirked faintly and continued, "It has nothing to do with whether you're short on cash or not. Besides, your son has been murdered. The wisest thing for you to do now is to report it to the police. The only thing the Hathaway family can do is compensate you financially."
Rick's face darkened. He glared at me and said, "Money? How much can he compensate me? Does he even have the money? The Parker family has lost its sole heir! How are you going to compensate us? Will he hand his son over to us?"
