Irvin pursed his lips and did not speak, but his deep eyes were full of thoughts and indescribable emotions. I had said everything I wanted to say, so I turned around and went downstairs directly.
There was a recreational area next to the hospital. I walked around and saw Shirley with Florence. Florence was helping Shirley take care of the child. Shirley's hair was in a mess and she looked haggard. She gobbled down the food I brought for her and judging from it, she was famished. She barely tasted the food as she wolfed it down at lightning speed.
Perhaps because she felt someone looking at her, Shirley looked up and stared directly in my direction. Upon seeing me, she was stunned for a few seconds and then raised her hand to wipe her mouth. Then, she smiled at me awkwardly.
I nodded and responded with a smile. It was a weird feeling. I did not feel good.
Approaching her, I did not say anything and instead waited for her to finish her meal. I looked at the child in Florence's arms. He wasn't crying anymore. Instead, he was giggling and looked adorable.
Florence was a chatterbox. Seeing that everyone was silent, she began to speak, "Modern girls like you both are so skinny. With your figure, you wouldn't have much milk for the baby. When I was at your age, I had so much breastmilk that it would overflow. I had no choice but to pump it out before I go to bed. But back in those days, refrigerators did not exist so if the baby did not drink the milk in a few days, it had to be thrown away. Thinking back, I feel that I wasted so much of my milk. What a pity!"
After taking her last bite, Shirley smiled bitterly. Then, she looked at Dannie and said, "Yes, what a pity!"
After her meal, Shirley went to clean herself up and then took Dannie from Florence's arms to feed him. Perhaps Dannie was really hungry, so he began to suckle hurriedly.
Since Shirley had just finished her meal, she wasn't lactating much. Dannie bit down hard on her nipple and Shirley's face contorted in pain. However, she forced herself to endure it.
