In reality, Edith had given the entire sum of fifty million dollars to Samantha alone.
That was because Samantha had eavesdropped on Edith's phone conversation and found out Edith had lied to Jasper. Edith had told Jasper that the woman he slept with had died.
Truth be told, the woman Jasper had slept with was Willow!
However, Edith couldn't let Jasper find out about this.
So Samantha had blackmailed Edith into giving her the money. If Edith had refused, she would have exposed Edith for lying.
That was why Edith had given all fifty million dollars to Samantha to keep the latter quiet.
Samantha had frequently blackmailed Edith over the past five years because of this secret they were hiding.
This time, when Jasper asked Edith to investigate the woman from that night, she immediately contacted Samantha over the phone. She asked Samantha to fabricate a document, which had no detectable loopholes, and deliver it to the CEO's office.
Samantha had come just in time. If she were late for even a second, Jasper would have found out about Willow's true identity.
Edith and Samantha were able to convince Jasper and avoid arousing any suspicion. However, there was something Jasper couldn't quite wrap his head around. "There are only three of them in the family. How is thirty million not enough for them?"
Why did Willow have to steal and use such lowly methods to trick others?
Samantha had thought of an answer to this long ago. She calmly replied, "Mr. Hughes, you may not know this, but Willow's mother, Lara, is a gambling addict. She can lose a lot of money in just one night. Thirty million dollars could never be enough for her. Come to think of it, I feel rather sorry for Willow. She's doing everything she can to make ends meet, but her mother always loses it all."
"I pity her, and that's why I suggested that she work in my company. However, her wage would of course be lower than if she worked in Hughes Corporation. I guess that's probably why she lied about her identity to Hughes Corporation. It was so that she could work here and earn a higher wage. Mr. Hughes, please don't blame her. She hasn’t had it easy," Samantha added.
In order to make the story more believable, she even pretended to say good things about Willow to Jasper and pleaded to him on her behalf.
After all, if Samantha appeared kind and devoted to her sister, only then might Jasper believe what she said.
If Jasper became suspicious and investigated deeper into the matter, things could go very bad.
