Joe went downstairs to open the door, while Paul had already arranged for the restaurant staff to deliver the food.
The meal consisted of eight dishes and one soup, a well-balanced spread with both meat and vegetables. It was the kind of food they usually enjoyed.
Skylar was exhausted from everything that had happened. Joe smiled, picking her up and carrying her downstairs.
"Eat more," he said gently.
Although Skylar was hungry, she had no strength left. She replied, "I'll just watch you eat."
Joe took a few bites and then frowned. "It's not as good as what you make."
He wasn't trying to flatter her. He genuinely felt that way. He could barely finish a bowl of food prepared by anyone else, but Skylar's cooking suited his taste so perfectly that he could finish two bowls in no time.
Skylar shot him a glare. "If you hadn't been so relentless earlier, dragging me around so many times, I could've prepped everything in the kitchen. It would've only taken ten minutes to cook two dishes. But now, I can't even summon the strength."
Joe chuckled. "You're right."
But compared to filling his stomach, he preferred to fill himself up first.
…
A few days later, after finishing work, Skylar was about to head home when a call from Minerva changed her plans.
"Recently, this young woman has been bothering my husband. I was at the hospital earlier with my kid for his vaccination. After I left, this woman showed up and claimed to be my husband's wife.
"She said I stole her husband, mentioned that Rowan and I were married in a past life, and claimed I had never met my husband. She sounded so convincing; it almost felt like it had happened.
"I don't know if it's because I was startled, but I can't shake off this uneasy feeling. Skye, can we meet for dinner tonight? I just need someone to talk to."
Skylar immediately made her way to the restaurant they had agreed upon.
"Where's your son?" Skylar asked when she noticed Minerva hadn't brought the child along.
