Elsie had heard that Skylar was a very impressive person. She had seen pictures of Joe and Skylar attending events together, and Skylar's beauty and presence were undeniable.
It made Elsie wonder if Joe might be interested in her. After all, she'd heard that many women had tried to seduce Joe in the past, some even throwing themselves at him for nothing more than a one-night stand. Yet, none of them had ever succeeded.
Elsie understood why Alban had asked her to do this. Her father's company was on the brink of bankruptcy, and the debts owed to Alban were substantial. If she didn't comply, her family would be ruined. She couldn't bear to see her parents suffer.
Her brother had also divorced because of the constant turmoil at home, and her parents had aged overnight under the stress.
Elsie knew what she was doing wasn't exactly right, but… she had no choice.
"If… If he doesn't even look at me, if he doesn't like me, what should I do? Can I stop here?" Elsie asked.
Alban's smile was knowing. "You're still young and don't understand men. Come with me inside. Don't forget, today your role is my assistant."
Elsie took a deep breath, her hands clenched tightly. "Okay, I understand."
As the door to the private room opened, she followed Alban inside. Her eyes immediately found Joe. The people around him were waiting for him to speak, and it was clear—he was the one at the top, the most respected figure in the room, towering over everyone else.
When his gaze swept over her, her heart skipped a beat.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Martin, I was caught in traffic. Let me drink this as punishment!" Alban said, sitting at the table and immediately pouring himself a full glass of wine, drinking it with exaggerated sincerity.
The people around him began joking.
