Skylar reassured Minerva. "It's okay."
Life after marriage was blissful for Minerva. She and her husband complemented each other so well that anyone who saw them could sense the harmony in their relationship.
The strength of a bond often radiated like an invisible magnetic field—something tangible yet unseen, felt by those near the couple.
"It's like this," Minerva began. "My father-in-law hasn't been feeling well lately. He's had full-body check-ups at the hospital, but nothing serious has shown up…"
Skylar's expression grew serious as she listened to Minerva. Recently, Jipsburg had seen a troubling increase in negative items, and they seemed to be surfacing with alarming frequency.
Having encountered similar cases before, Skylar had a pretty good idea of what was happening after hearing Minerva's description.
Later, Skylar and Joe accompanied Minerva to her father-in-law's house, where Skylar dealt with the negative items.
On their way home that night, Skylar held a piece of talisman paper in her hand, her brow furrowed in thought.
Joe noticed her troubled expression. "Is there something wrong with the talisman?"
"There have been too many of these lately. They exploit people's greed, and it's causing a lot of harm," Skylar said, tearing the paper in half.
As she tore it, she could feel a faint warmth at her fingertips.
"Greed is a part of human nature," Joe said softly, his tone almost philosophical.
Desire drove people. Some could resist their impulses and avoid shortcuts, but others succumbed to temptation. Step by step, they became slaves to their own greed. For many, these negative items offered the same comfort that others sought in prayer or blessings.
Skylar nodded thoughtfully and added, "Desire is endless, and so are these negative items. I have a feeling they will only increase. There are people who profit from them, so they won't disappear."
Joe replied, "Even without these negative items, people will find unethical ways to get what they want."
Skylar turned to look at Joe, their eyes meeting. A quiet understanding passed between them.
