Finn was momentarily stunned.
But he quickly regained his composure. After Janine said "hello" a second time, he hurriedly said, "It's me, Finn."
Janine fell silent immediately, her tone turning cold. "What do you want?"
Finn was momentarily taken aback. In his memory, Janine from 20 years ago had always looked at him with nothing but affection. She had never shown any signs of a spoiled attitude and was gentle and understanding.
If it weren't for poverty back then, he might not have left.
With a sigh, he said, "There's no need for things to be so strained between us. Some matters aren't as terrible as you think, and I'm not as bad as you thought. A lot has happened recently, and I think you might have misunderstood me."
"There's clearly nothing important. I'm hanging up. Don't call me again. You're just a stranger to me," Janine replied with the same icy tone.
Finn recalled their last meeting, which had also ended in hostility. Janine hadn't shown the slightest regard for him back then, either.
"Wait! I want to see you. Can you come to Murida? I want to talk face-to-face. These years have been hard on you, and I know I owe you," Finn said quickly.
He could tell that when Janine said she'd hang up, she meant it.
On Janine's end, when she heard Finn's words, it was as though she'd heard something absurd. "Murida? I wouldn't see you even if you were in Jipsburg, let alone in Murida."
"Who is it?" Ted asked.
Janine answered warmly, "A piece of garbage."
Then, she hung up the phone.
