Rocco's steely gaze locked onto Maurice, his voice resonating with determination. "The Gloam Division can acknowledge Matthew Larson's innocence, but we will not apologize to him. That's our bottom line."
Unfazed by Rocco's brusque demeanor, Maurice replied with a hint of reproach, "Commander Rocco, interrupting someone while they speak is not gentlemanly behavior. While I won't dismiss your words, I must remind you of a crucial fact. We don't care whether you agree."
He paused, letting his words sink in before continuing, "Furthermore, Mr. Larson is actually on very good terms with His Majesty King Gadel, though he has never mentioned it."
His piercing gaze remained fixed on Rocco, his expression unreadable. The truth hung heavy in the air between them. The Gloam Division could refuse their conditions, but they'd better be prepared for a financial drought in three days.
The organization was walking on thin ice, and Maurice knew Rocco would have no choice but to hear him out.
"I apologize for my rudeness. Please, continue."
As expected, Rocco eventually let Maurice continue.
He could not afford the consequences of having no funds in a few days. The hungry wolves of the Gloam Division would turn on their seemingly incompetent commander before the end. So, despite his reluctance, he had to agree to the terms.
The earlier interruption was merely a probe of the Seraphis Great Commercial Union's limits. What Rocco hadn't anticipated was how firm those limits were.
"Our third condition," Maurice continued, his tone brooking no argument, "is the immediate withdrawal of all forces surrounding Thorneville and the full restoration of water and electricity services. Fourth, we'll provide 60% of your original monthly funding upon fulfilling these conditions."
Rocco's composure shattered. He slammed his fist on the table, rising to his feet. "Everything else is acceptable, but that last condition is outrageous!"
