In Hulwin, Matthew had risen early and begun preparing breakfast for Sasha.
The phone rang suddenly. Matthew, wearing only a shirt, hurriedly set the pan down, scooped out the eggs, sprinkled a bit of sugar on them, and then turned to answer the call.
"Hey, Matthew, I just arrived at Hulwin Airport. Come pick me up." Helen's sharp voice came through the line, and Matthew held the phone a little further from his ear.
He placed the sandwiches and eggs with milk on the dining table, changed into the suit he had worn out with Sasha the night before, and drove a Maybach to the airport. His mother-in-law was very particular about appearances, and he figured she would nag him endlessly if he didn't make a good impression.
At Hulwin Airport, Helen stood at the arrivals area, holding a small suitcase, wearing sunglasses that covered half her face and a round hat on her head.
"Ma'am, would you like a ride? Our cars are cheap and comfortable," a man said as he approached Helen.
"No need. My son-in-law is a big shot. He'll be here to pick me up soon. I don't want to ride in your shabby taxis," Helen replied, her tone dripping with pride when she spoke of Matthew, completely ignoring how she once lamented his shortcomings.
"You're not fooling anyone, ma'am. You've been standing here for ten minutes. If your son-in-law were really such a big shot, would he make you wait this long?" The driver looked at Helen, who didn't seem to have any air of a successful person, and thought she was just putting on a show.
Helen felt a twinge of irritation at the driver's words. She had been waiting for ten minutes already, and Matthew still hadn't arrived. Of course, Helen being Helen, she failed to consider the airport was a good 25 miles from the city center, and no matter how fast the car drove, it couldn't cover the distance in such a short time.
