I had never seen a dining room this big. It was like a school or college mess, with better furniture and from the smell of it...better food as well.
It wasn't too crowded, which was a relief. I wasn't certain if I could handle mingling with too many people. Meg grabbed one of the seats and gestured me to sit with her.
I sat down and looked around at the unfamiliar faces. A good-looking man arrived and sat next to Meg, they sniffed each other and exchanged kisses, which made it obvious that he was her mate.
"This is my mate, Paul," Meg beamed.
Paul smiled at me, then shifted his gaze back to Meg. We were soon joined by Rain, her mate Damon and finally Zaiden.
"Hey," he said and slid next to me.
"Hey," I smiled back at him.
"I don't see madam Luna, where is she?" I asked, innocently.
Rain snorted, and Meg gave a smug smile.
"Alpha and Luna are preoccupied, when our men return from such raids and killing the rogues they expect a reward. You know what I mean, right?" Rain asked me, wiggling her eyebrows.
I nodded.
"If you are planning to give it to Zaiden....." She continued.
"You don't have to do anything like that, dear." Zaiden interrupted Rain, giving me a reassuring look. Though, he looked a bit flushed.
Rain just shrugged. I had concluded by now that werewolves were very sexual beings. They were not shy about displaying their love for their mates. Their threshold for nudity and public display of affection was also pretty high. However, it was always consensual. Unlike those rogues, this pack was civilized. I was slowly getting comfortable with them. I remained quiet while others talked and discussed the raids. A few times my knuckles became white as the memories of my torture flashed in front of my eyes. It was only due to Zaiden's calming presence that I remained seated. I don't know when he had gripped my hand in his large hands.
"Years ago, when I was a newly turned wolf. Damon and the other men went for a raid. Now, I make sure to pack extra tracksuits for them. However, that day. They forgot to take along the extra clothes." The rain continued with glee.
"Guess what, they all destroyed their clothes in shifting. They had to drive back butt naked! Imagine my horror when the naked men started unloading from the SUVs. Thank God, at least the windows were tinted. " Rain laughed.
"Rain you have to relay this story to everyone right?" Damon commented, rolling his eyes.
I burst into laughter... I laughed for a long time. I don't remember when I had laughed so much. When I finally stopped, Zaiden was staring at me, mesmerized. I stopped and blushed.
"You should laugh more often," he said.
"Ok," I replied.
"Hey Zaiden if you are done, why don't you take her for a walk? Don't worry, I will inform the Alpha." Damon said, with a smirk.
Zaiden's eyes lit up, and he turned towards me with a questioning look. I nodded. Soon we were walking down a well-trodden path among tall trees. It was a little chilly, so Zaiden gave me his jacket. It smelled musky, just like him.
"I killed them, not all of them, but whoever I could. I will kill each one of them until you are avenged." He suddenly said, after a long silence, his were glowing gold with excitement.
"Thank you," I said quietly.
"The Alpha is happy with me. I think he will let me stay...."
I was still tongue-tied whenever I was with Zaiden, while he discussed his life, his dreams. I knew almost everything about him. He never pressurized me to talk or touch me. He used to be just there, comforting me with his presence.
"There is a beautiful lake a few kilometres away, but it would be a long walk for you. Maybe some other day...." He mumbled.
"You can carry me," I blurted out.
The look on his face was priceless.
"You want me to carry you? "
"Yes, as a wolf. You can do that, right?" I had never seen him shift. Apart from those monsters, I had not seen anyone shift here.
"Won't that be scary for you?" He asked cautiously.
"I prefer not to be scared anymore," I replied.
He still looked a little unsure, but finally relented.
