"It's been a long time since I stopped seeing myself as your wife."
With a calm composure, Lily added in a helpless voice, "No one will treat me like I'm your wife either."
Xavier stood up and walked to the window. He leaned against the windowsill as he fixed his eyes on Lily.
"The authorities will reach out to you really soon to inform you of the outcome of Bruce's case. When that time comes… I will publicly announce that you are Mrs. Fulton."
Lily's eyes darted toward him. "You're going to disclose my identity?"
"After that, you can be at ease about being my wife. You wouldn't have to work and earn a living."
When Xavier told Lily that she could be at ease about being his wife, he directed his gaze toward Lily's right hand.
He furrowed his brows slightly when he recalled Marvin's words.
Lily lifted her covers and got out of bed. Even as Xavier leaned against the windowsill, she was only up to his shoulder height.
She lifted her head to look at him. "Have you ever asked me for my agreement before making any decisions?"
Xavier could tell that she was against what he said.
He practically gave her absolutely no way to object by saying, "Why would you disagree with anything? I won't do anything to hurt you."
It was true that he wouldn't hurt her. Even so, he wasn't going to love her.
All of a sudden, Xavier's phone rang. He headed out to answer the call.
Lily was fuming. Xavier was being ridiculous, and she failed to find out anything about her hand injury. Instead, all she got out of him was that she "could be at ease" about being his wife. He made it sound as if they could turn back time as they wished.
As Xavier hadn't been going to the office lately, he had to handle most of his work virtually. Thus, he had double the number of calls he would otherwise have to answer.
However, this call was simple and brief. After listening to his caller's update, all he said was "sign it" before ending the call.
He then turned around to head back into the hospital ward. Just as he placed his hand over the door handle, he heard Maryanne's voice coming from within.
Lily was on a video call with her.
"I knew it! Xavier the Hound wouldn't be of any use even if he stayed back. I knew that he was going to hire a caregiver at the end of the day."
