Chapter 226
1/1
Sarah followed Tamara to the study after lunch to report on work while Edilli and Shane called Xavier away.
Lily planned to wait til Edith took her attemoon nap and then find an excuse to leave. Until then, she went to the sunroom in the garden to pass the time.
With the slight pouring in and the room being at a comfortable temperature, she slipped on her down jacket, ready to leave at any moment, her palms slightly sweating.
Her phone rang–Maryanne was calling. “What time are we going to the hospital?”
“I’ll head over soon, around 2:30 p.m.,” Lily replied, checking the time.
“I’ll pass by your place and pick you up,” Maryanne said with a chuckle. “I’ll be there soon, let’s hang out for a bit.”
Lily hesitated. She wasn’t sure how to tell her that she was at the Fulton Manor. Knowing Maryanne’s temperament, she’d probably get upset if she found out.
She stared at the bright sunlight outside, trying to find the right words, but nothing came.
Maryanne saw right through her. “You’re not at home?”
Lily replied, “Mm”
“Ar the Fulton Manor?” Maryanne guessed with surprising accuracy.
“Grandma doesn’t know about the divorce yet. Her blood pressure’s high, so she asked me to bring some medicine when I came for the family dinner today,” Lily explained quietly,
Maryanne responded with understanding laughter, “Got It But tell me, what happened this time?”
Ever since Lily mentioned the divorce, it felt like a disaster whenever she saw Xavier or went to the Fulton Manor.
“It’s nothing special, just that Xavier brought Sarah home for dinner.”
The sunlight was harsh, so Lily raised her hand to shield her face, her fingers casting a shifting shadow as she moved.
She tried to act at ease,
but she was clearly struggling to suppress her negative emotions,
However, Maryanne had a way of getting straight to the heart of things “What could make you drop the “just” from your explanation? Do you need to see them sleeping together in front of you before you admit how upset you are?
For a moment, everything went silent. Lily’s ears rang, and a wave of bitterness almost overwhelmed her, threatening to swallow her whole. Her throat tightened, but no words came out
“I’ll pick you up later from the Fulton Manor,” Maryanne said softly. “You can cry in my car, but hold it together for now.”
Maryanne knew Lily was trying to keep her composure and almost felt the urge to tease her, but as soon as she did, regret washed over her.
The call ended with a busy tone in Lily’s ear. Her eyes were red–rimmed, unsure if it was from Maryanne’s concem or if the emotions she’d been fighting back had finally spilled over.
She slipped her phone into her pocket, tucked her hands inside her jacket, and lifted her gaze.
